Each circuit was wired to a different panel.  I have a manufactured house, so it comes with its own set of challenges.  It was done very efficiently, and the electrician and his apprentice were very informative as to the process and what they were doing. How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be upgraded?

Common warning signs include breakers that trip frequently, flickering or dimming lights, a burning smell, unusual buzzing, visible rust or damage, and a panel that feels unusually warm. You may also need an upgrade if your home still uses fuses or your panel does not have room for additional circuits.

If you notice heat, burning smells, sparking, or other signs of damage near your panel, avoid touching it and contact a licensed electrician promptly.

What is the difference between a panel upgrade and a service upgrade?

A panel upgrade replaces or increases the capacity of the breaker panel inside your home. A service upgrade may involve additional equipment that brings power from the utility connection into your home.

The work you need depends on your existing service, the condition of your equipment, and how much electricity your home requires. We will evaluate the complete system before recommending an upgrade.

Do I need a panel upgrade before installing an EV charger, hot tub, or heat pump?

Possibly, but not always. These additions can place a significant new demand on your electrical system. We will complete a load calculation to determine whether your existing service has enough capacity.

If your system can safely support the new equipment, a full upgrade may not be needed. If it cannot, we will explain your options before the installation moves forward.

Can you replace an old fuse box with a breaker panel?

Yes. Homes that still use fuse boxes can often be updated with a modern circuit breaker panel. Before recommending the replacement, we will inspect the electrical service and determine whether any other updates are needed.

A breaker panel does not make older wiring new, so we will also let you know if we find concerns elsewhere in the electrical system.

Will the electricity need to be turned off during a panel upgrade?

Yes. Power must be disconnected while the old equipment is removed and the new panel is installed. The length of the interruption depends on the work being completed and whether the utility company is involved.

We will explain the expected schedule ahead of time so you can prepare for the temporary outage.

Do panel and service upgrades require a permit?

Most panel replacements and electrical service upgrades require an electrical permit and inspection. Projects involving the incoming electrical service may also require coordination with the utility company.

Should I upgrade to a larger electrical service?

A larger service may be helpful if your existing system cannot safely support your current electrical use or your future plans. However, bigger is not automatically better or necessary.
